The Incense Route: the story of a resin used from antiquity for its aroma

One of the finest incense is produced by Boswellia Sacra, a tree growing in Oman.
Oman has always been one of the main producer of incense and the starting point for caravans travelling to  to the Mediterranean, India and the East for their trade.
International trade is not a modern concept: even before the birth of Christ merchants covered considerable distances with no confort and facing great difficulties and risks. Carriyng incense from Oman to the Mediterranean required travelling through the desert and the payment of "custom"  dues  imposed by cities located on the caravan route.
In the book "Oman", by Mauro Raffaelli, it is described how incense has always been connected to rituals, and not just the religious ones. Roman emperors and the pharaohs in Egypt made extensive use of it.
The Boswellia Sacra tree also grows in Somalia and Ethiopia,
There are also other Boswellia trees that are used for making incense, such as  Boswellia frereana, Boswellia rivae etc ...
Boswellia Sacra is a resin that is collected from the trees through spontaneous production or after making an incision on the trunk.
The essential oil is extracted by steam distillation.
The olfactory profile is complex : a hint of lemon, combined with a fresh and a dry touch. I personally associate its aroma  with  elevation and opening upward, intuition and inspiration.
This essential oil is very good to diffuse in a room: it  elevates the spirit and cleans (in the spiritual and physical sense as  this essence is antiseptic).
it is also excellent in massage in moderate doses, in a bath is beneficial to relieve stress.
It is a component of choice in Perfumery.
Often in  perfumery incense is combined with spices, forming synergies with captivating scents: it is the so-called "oriental".
Tradition also gives to incense cosmetic properties: the essential oil is definitely healing, added to a cream base it improves the natural skin tone.
If you like to know more about Incense, you can view the site on the area of Dhofar which is one of the sites under the protection of UNESCO.
